A 50-year resident of Hempstead, Mayor Waylyn Hobbs Jr. brings extensive executive experience in managing government operations and delivering results. His distinguished public service includes roles as Deputy Mayor, Vice President of the School Board, and Housing Authority Commissioner, where he successfully led the agency out of troubled status through effective management and fiscal responsibility.
As senior pastor of Coney Island Cathedral for 27 years, Mayor Hobbs demonstrated his ability to transform communities through strategic leadership and partnership building. Working hand-in-hand with elected officials and grassroots leaders, he helped revitalize a once-forgotten neighborhood. This same dedication to community revitalization now drives his vision for Hempstead's future.
Since taking office as Mayor, Hobbs has secured over $100 million in funding for village improvements, modernized public safety operations, and completed more road repairs than any administration in the past 16 years. His leadership has brought dramatic improvements to village infrastructure, including the redesign of the Clinton Street water plant and development of over 300 units of mixed-income housing.
Mayor Hobbs continues to serve as an active member of the Hempstead Fire Department and EMT, maintaining his deep connection to public safety and emergency services. His combination of executive leadership experience, public safety background, and commitment to community service has established a new standard for responsive, results-focused government in Hempstead.
